Baby Makes 3
Mum, dad and baby attend a two hour evening session, once a week for three weeks. The program is led by a male and female facilitator, Baby Makes 3 gives mums and dads the opportunity to share their experiences and hear from others who are going through the same journey. For many Dads this is their first occasion to meet with other first time parents using a group work approach.
Baby Makes 3 is delivered as part of the new parents groups run by maternal and child health services for first-time parents. Experience has shown that this is a great way to engage new parents in a relaxing and informal setting. The Baby makes 3 program covers the following topics:
- The transition to parenthood
- Expectations of mums and dads
- Who does what? / Gender roles
- Healthy relationships
- Meaningful equality
- Sex and intimacy
- Dealing with conflict
A previous evaluation of the Baby Makes 3 program found that:
- Participants had an increased awareness and understanding of issues related to the transition to parenthood, including gender equality, gender roles, societal expectations and each other’s experiences
- There was greater communication between parents about these topics
- And some shifts in attitudes in relation to these topics
What Previous Participants Have Said…..
“A good opportunity to reflect on the changes a new baby has brought and to spend time focusing on improving our relationship as a couple.”
“Well worth it. It helped us talk about topics we were making assumptions about.”
“…very, very helpful. Must attend.”
Current Baby Makes 3 Project
In late 2012 CH was funded as lead agency for the Baby Makes 3 project by the Department of Justice. The funded project involves delivering the Baby Makes 3 group program on a trial basis at selected sites in the cities of Boroondara, Knox, Manningham, Monash, Maroondah, Whitehorse, and in Yarra Ranges Shire. The three-year project will deliver the program to 2000 first-time parents through Maternal Child Health services, as an extension to their existing new parents programs. The program is also being delivered across the Great South Coast region of Victoria & within 4 other Metropolitan municipalities.
